Rail transportation facilitates the movement of passengers and freight throughout Ontario and around the continent. Rail lines offer a safe, reliable and environmentally friendly mode of transportation that generally provides higher capacity and lower cost than trucks. Transport Canada’s Transportation in Canada (2013) study reports, "the rail transport industry generates approximately $10 billion per year – 95% of which comes from rail freight operations." There are 18 rail operators in Ontario, nearly all of which operate through Toronto, connecting to the rest of North America.
In Canada, passenger train service is provided nationally by VIA Rail, while Amtrak provides connections to the United States. GO Trains offer commuters reliable service between Toronto and the surrounding areas.
